Statement of Purpose

Mission Literacy in Motion believes that improving literacy skills enriches the quality of life for individuals and the community.  Therefore, our purpose is to promote the growth of literacy in Mission.

Definition of Literacy

We value and adopt a broad definition multifaceted definition of literacy.  We adhere to traditional reading, writing, and numeracy modes of understanding literacy.  However, we also embrace: social literacy, cultural literacy, health literacy, civic literacy, technological and ecological literacy which encompasses skills and knowledge citizens use to effectively live rich fulfilling lives.

Statement of Goals

• To identify and to address the literacy needs of the Mission community in all its diversities
• To promote community awareness of the many facets of literacy
• To increase access and use of new and exsisting literacy opportunities
• To encourage and to support learners to enter and to complete literacy programs
• To establish literacy partnerships among community, workplace, and service groups
• To collaborate with organizations as they develop ltieracy plans
• To make use of as many funding opportunities as possible
